How it works

What UTC is

Coordinated Universal Time is the world’s reference time. Every time zone is defined as an offset from it — UTC+1 for Paris in winter, UTC−4 for New York in summer — and UTC itself never changes for daylight saving.

UTC is kept by atomic clocks and adjusted with occasional leap seconds so that it stays within a second of the Earth’s rotation. Aviation, shipping, science and computer systems use it so that everyone refers to the same moment.

UTC and GMT

Greenwich Mean Time is the mean solar time at Greenwich, London. For everyday purposes it shows the same time as UTC. As a time zone, GMT is the UK’s winter time: in summer the UK moves to British Summer Time (BST, UTC+1), while UTC stays where it is.

What is the UTC time now?

It is shown live at the top of this page, corrected against Hourora’s server clock. UTC is the same everywhere on Earth.

Is UTC the same as GMT?

They show the same time to within a second. UTC is the scientific standard kept by atomic clocks; GMT is also the name of the UK’s winter time zone, which the UK leaves in summer for BST (UTC+1).

Does UTC change for daylight saving time?

No. UTC never moves; it is the local time zones that change their offset from UTC when they switch to and from summer time.

What is my offset from UTC?
