Full moon calendar

Full moon calendar 2020

There are 13 full moons in 2020: the first on Friday, 10 January 2020, the last on Wednesday, 30 December 2020. Each has its date and time in UTC and in your own time zone, its traditional name, and a note when it is a supermoon, a blue moon or part of a lunar eclipse.

The full moon is one instant, the same everywhere; the date depends on the time zone. Dates in the first column, supermoon distances and the blue-moon rules use UTC. “Your time” follows this device’s clock.

Traditional names

The names of the full moons

Traditional North American names of the full moon, the month they belong to and their dates in 2020
MoonMonthIn 2020Origin
Wolf MoonJanuary10 JanWolves howling in the depth of winter.
Snow MoonFebruary9 FebThe heaviest snowfall of the year in much of North America.
Worm MoonMarch9 MarThe ground softens in spring and earthworms reappear.
Pink MoonApril8 AprAfter the wild ground phlox that blooms in early spring; the Moon itself is not pink.
Flower MoonMay7 MayFlowers in bloom.
Strawberry MoonJune5 JunStrawberries ripen and are picked.
Buck MoonJuly5 JulMale deer grow their new antlers in midsummer.
Sturgeon MoonAugust3 AugSturgeon were easiest to catch in the Great Lakes in late summer.
Corn MoonSeptember2 SeptThe corn is ready to harvest.
Harvest MoonSeptember / October1 OctThe full moon nearest the autumn equinox, rising soon after sunset on several evenings in a row, which gave farmers light to bring in the crops.
Hunter’s MoonOctober31 OctHunting season, with the fields cleared after the harvest.
Beaver MoonNovember30 NovTime to set beaver traps before the swamps froze.
Cold MoonDecember30 DecThe long, cold nights of early winter.

These are North American folk names, as printed in almanacs such as The Old Farmer’s Almanac, one for each month. Other cultures name the full moons differently, and the names vary from source to source. The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest the September equinox, so it takes the place of the September (Corn) or October (Hunter’s) moon, depending on the year.

How it works

What counts as a supermoon

A supermoon is a full moon that happens when the Moon is unusually close to Earth. There is no official definition. We call a full moon a supermoon when the Moon’s distance at that instant is at most 367,607 km: Fred Espenak’s limit, the Moon’s mean perigee distance (363,396 km) plus a tenth of the way to its mean apogee distance (405,504 km). It is Richard Nolle’s original idea (1979) of “within 90% of” closest approach, turned into a distance.

Other sources draw the line elsewhere, for instance at 360,000 km or 358,884 km, which gives shorter lists, so a full moon can be a supermoon on one site and not on another. A supermoon looks at most about 14% wider and 30% brighter than the smallest full moon of the year, a difference that is hard to notice without a comparison.

Two kinds of blue moon

A blue moon is not blue. Today the term usually means the second full moon in a calendar month, which happens roughly every two to three years because a lunar cycle (29.5 days) is shorter than most months. The older rule, from the Maine Farmers’ Almanac, calls the third full moon of an astronomical season with four full moons a blue moon (seasons run from equinox to solstice and back).

We mark both and say which. Months and seasons are counted in UTC: in a time zone far from UTC, a full moon near midnight can fall in a different month, and the blue moon moves to the neighbouring date or disappears there.

Lunar eclipses at full moon

A lunar eclipse happens at a full moon when the Moon passes through the Earth’s shadow, which needs the full moon to be close to the plane of the Earth’s orbit. We compare the Moon’s distance from that plane with the size of the Earth’s shadow at the Moon to tell penumbral, partial and total eclipses apart. Where the eclipse pages list the eclipse, its name links to them for times and local visibility.

Penumbral eclipses are subtle: the Moon only dims slightly and often nothing is visible by eye. Partial and total eclipses are visible from the whole night side of the Earth.

How accurate this is

The phases come from Jean Meeus’s Astronomical Algorithms (chapter 49) and agree with the US Naval Observatory’s tables to the minute for 2026–2027. Equinoxes and solstices follow Meeus chapter 27 and agree with the Observatory within two minutes. The Moon’s distance has an error of a few kilometres, which only matters for a full moon within a few kilometres of the supermoon limit.

The calculations assume a constant difference between Earth time and UTC and are good for 2000–2050; beyond that the minutes drift. The names are folklore, not astronomy.

Questions

Good to know

When is the next full moon?

The next full moon is on Monday, 26 October 2026 at 04:12 UTC (Hunter’s Moon).

How many full moons are there in 2020?

There are 13 full moons in 2020 (dates in UTC): Fri 10 Jan, Sun 9 Feb, Mon 9 Mar, Wed 8 Apr, Thu 7 May, Fri 5 Jun, Sun 5 Jul, Mon 3 Aug, Wed 2 Sept, Thu 1 Oct, Sat 31 Oct, Mon 30 Nov and Wed 30 Dec.

Is there a blue moon in 2020?

The second full moon of a month falls on Sat 31 Oct.

Which full moons are supermoons in 2020?

By the 367,607 km rule: Sun 9 Feb (362,500 km), Mon 9 Mar (357,400 km), Wed 8 Apr (357,000 km) and Thu 7 May (361,200 km).

Is there a lunar eclipse at a full moon in 2020?

Yes: Fri 10 Jan: Penumbral lunar eclipse, Fri 5 Jun: Penumbral lunar eclipse, Sun 5 Jul: Penumbral lunar eclipse and Mon 30 Nov: Penumbral lunar eclipse.

Why does another calendar show a different date for the same full moon?

The full moon is a single instant, but the date depends on where you are: a full moon at 23:00 UTC is already the next day in Asia. We list UTC dates and show the date and time in your own zone next to them.

Why are the full moons called Wolf, Snow, Worm and so on?

They are North American folk names, popularised by almanacs: one for each month, after the season’s weather, plants and animals. They are traditions, not astronomy, and other cultures use other names.
