How to read the map

What the colours mean

Every zone is coloured by how far its clock is from UTC right now. Neighbouring hours always get different colours, so a band of one colour is a band of one clock time. Zones whose offset is not a whole number of hours, such as India at UTC+5:30 or Nepal at UTC+5:45, are hatched.

Colour is never the only signal: the offset is written on the strip along the top, on each zone that is big enough to hold it, and in the colour key under the map. The shaded half of the map is night; its edge is the terminator, where the sun is on the horizon.

Why zones are not straight lines

In theory the Earth is cut into 24 bands of 15° of longitude, one hour apart. In practice governments choose their own clocks: China uses a single zone across five bands, Spain keeps the clock of Central Europe although it lies in the west, and a few places run on half or quarter hours. The map follows the legal boundaries, so it is full of steps and detours.

The map is equirectangular: longitude runs left to right and latitude top to bottom, which is why zones show as upright bands. Areas near the poles look larger than they are.

Why the map changes during the year

The colours show the offsets in force right now. When a country moves its clocks for daylight saving time, its zones change colour at the moment of the change and the map follows within a minute. The panel under the map says whether daylight saving time is in use in the zone you selected.

Where the boundaries come from

Contains information from timezone-boundary-builder, which is made available here under the Open Database Licence (ODbL).

The zone boundaries come from timezone-boundary-builder by Evan Siroky (release 2026e), which builds them from OpenStreetMap data: © OpenStreetMap contributors. The offsets, abbreviations, clocks and the day and night line are computed by Hourora from the IANA time zone database (release 2026e) and from astronomical formulas; they are not part of that database.

To keep the map fast we simplified the boundaries to a resolution of a few kilometres. The simplified file is a derivative database and is shared under the same licence, the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0: you may copy, share and adapt it as long as you credit the source and share your changes the same way. Hourora's own text, design and code are not covered by it.

Limits: at this resolution small islands, narrow borders and coastlines are approximate, and the map shows zone boundaries as OpenStreetMap records them, including in disputed areas, which is not an opinion on any border. For the exact rules of a zone, open its page.

Good to know

How many time zones are there in the world?

In everyday use there are 37 different UTC offsets today, from UTC−11 to UTC+14. The IANA time zone database has 312 geographic zones that countries use, because places that share an offset today can still differ in their history or in their daylight saving rules.

Which time zones are not a whole number of hours from UTC?

Right now these are UTC−9:30, UTC−2:30, UTC+3:30, UTC+4:30, UTC+5:30, UTC+5:45, UTC+6:30, UTC+8:45, UTC+9:30, UTC+10:30, UTC+13:45. Examples are India (UTC+5:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45), parts of Australia and the Chatham Islands of New Zealand.

Which place has the earliest and the latest clock?

The earliest offset in use is UTC+14 (the Line Islands, Kiribati), which sees each new day first. The latest populated offset is UTC−11; the uninhabited Baker and Howland Islands keep UTC−12 by convention.

How accurate is the map?

Offsets and clocks are exact: they come from the IANA tz database and update live. Boundaries are simplified to a few kilometres of detail, so near a border or on a small island the coloured area can be a little off; the table below the map is the precise list.
