How it works
Twilight, golden hour and blue hour
Twilight is named by how far the sun is below the horizon. Civil twilight lasts until it is 6° below: there is enough light to be outdoors without lamps. Nautical twilight runs to 12°, when the horizon at sea fades. Astronomical twilight ends at 18°, when the sky is fully dark. Near midsummer at higher latitudes the sun never sinks that far, and the night stays in twilight.
Golden hour is the warm, low light with the sun between 4° below and 6° above the horizon; blue hour is the deep blue just before and after it, with the sun between 6° and 4° below. Photographers use these limits, though there is no official definition, and the light you actually see depends on the weather.
How we compute it
The Sun’s position follows the NOAA solar calculator (after Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms). The Moon’s position uses the Montenbruck & Pfleger lunar series, its rise and set Meeus’s standard altitudes for the upper limb with refraction and parallax, and the principal phases Meeus’s chapter 49. Checked against the US Naval Observatory: rise, set and twilight agree within two minutes, the phases within one.
Times are for a flat, sea-level horizon with standard atmospheric refraction. Hills, buildings, altitude and unusual weather can shift what you see by a few minutes. Near the poles an event may not happen at all on a given day; we say so instead of guessing.
What time are sunrise and sunset in Southend-on-Sea today?
On Sunday, 18 October 2026 the sun rises at 07:26 and sets at 17:58 in Southend-on-Sea (BST), giving 10 h 32 min of daylight.
When is golden hour in Southend-on-Sea today?
Golden hour, with the sun between 4° below and 6° above the horizon, runs 07:05–08:13 in the morning and 17:11–18:18 in the evening. Blue hour comes just before the morning one (06:52–07:05) and just after the evening one (18:18–18:31).
What is the moon phase in Southend-on-Sea today?
First quarter, with 48% of the disc lit. Moonrise: 15:13. Moonset: 23:01.
When is the next full moon in Southend-on-Sea?
The next full moon is on Monday, 26 October 2026 at 04:12 local time in Southend-on-Sea (BST).
How accurate are these times?
Within about two minutes of the US Naval Observatory for sunrise, sunset, twilight, moonrise and moonset, and within a minute for the principal phases, for a sea-level horizon. Local terrain and weather can make the visible event a few minutes earlier or later.
