The Hijri calendar counts twelve lunar months of 29 or 30 days from the Hijra of 622 CE, so its year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year and its months move through the seasons. Hourora shows the Umm al-Qura calendar of Saudi Arabia, computed in advance by the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology from astronomical criteria and used for official purposes there.
Many countries and communities begin the months of Ramadan, Shawwal and Dhu al-Hijjah by sighting the new crescent, so the religious date where you live can be a day later, or occasionally earlier, than the Umm al-Qura date. Follow your local announcement for religious observances.
Tabular and civil variants
The tabular (arithmetical) Islamic calendar alternates 30- and 29-day months with 11 leap years in every 30, and needs no observation. It is used in some software and historical work and usually agrees with Umm al-Qura to within a day or two; we show it beside today's date for comparison.
How Hourora computes it
Dates come from your browser's own calendar data (the Unicode CLDR / ICU implementation of the official Umm al-Qura table, 1300–1600 AH), in your time zone. The Islamic day begins at sunset; the dates shown are the civil days they overlap from morning to evening.
Questions
Good to know
What is the Hijri date today?
In Makkah it is 8 Jumada I 1448 AH (Monday, 19 October 2026) in the Umm al-Qura calendar. The card at the top of this page shows the date for your own time zone.
Why is the Islamic date different in my country?
Umm al-Qura is computed in advance. Many countries start each month after the new crescent has been seen, which can make the local date a day later. For Ramadan and Eid, follow the announcement of your country's religious authority.
When is the next Ramadan?
By the Umm al-Qura calendar, 1 Ramadan 1448 AH is Monday, 8 February 2027.
How many days are in a Hijri year?
354 or 355: twelve months of 29 or 30 days. That is about 11 days fewer than a solar year, so Ramadan comes around 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.
