How it works

Months from the Moon, years from the Sun

Each Chinese month begins on the day of the new moon, as reckoned in China Standard Time (UTC+8), and has 29 or 30 days. The month that contains the December solstice is always the 11th. When 13 new moons fall between two such months, the first month without a principal solar term becomes a leap month and repeats the previous month's number, which keeps the year in step with the seasons.

Chinese New Year is the first day of month 1, between 21 January and 20 February. Each year carries one of 12 animals and one of five elements in a 60-year cycle of stems and branches; the animal changes at Chinese New Year, not on 1 January.

How Hourora computes it

We compute the calendar from the Sun and Moon using the rules of the Chinese national standard GB/T 33661-2017: new moons from Jean Meeus's Astronomical Algorithms (to within a minute), and the Sun's longitude for the solar terms. The results match the Hong Kong Observatory's published conversion tables; browsers' built-in Chinese calendars occasionally put a new moon close to midnight on the wrong day (Chinese New Year 2027 is 6 February, not 7). Supported years: 1901–2100.
